The Regent closed its doors on Saturday
31 January 2004 and was purchased by the
Gateway City Church later the same year.
Considerable interest has been shown in the
theatre’s preservation with Wollongong Council
OLVWLQJ LW DV VLJQL¿FDQW LQ WKH /RFDO (QYLURQPHQW
Plan and the National Trust determining an
interim listing on the State Heritage Register.
It is considered to have local and state
importance because of its design, unrenovated
interior and association with the Jones family,
long connected with motion picture exhibition
in the district.
The Wollongong Regent is one of the few intact
grand cinemas remaining in New South Wales.
