The clumsiness of this replacement verandah can't detract from the fact that the Empress Prahran (1913) was one of the most
stylish buildings in a street of stylish buildings; mainly shopping emporiums designed to give the city centre a fright.
So confident is the design and its execution, that a thought arises: was it a direct copy of a theatre in London? A UK-based CATHS
member may be able to answer this question. Alas, the theatre was all-front; the interior failed to match those grand first impressions.
