Seymour Train Trip and 'Tatty Theatre' Visit
Some 33 members and guests traveled to Seymour on 17th October to join the Seymour Railway Heritage Center's excursion
to Benalla.
Warm, windy weather prevailed and before departure, a short ceremony was held to honour the restoration work on the J Class
steam locomotive and in particular the former Commonwealth Railways diesel locomotive. Indeed, the gentleman who
headed the diesel restoration has had the loco named after him as a tribute to his hard work. This engine completed over
5 000 000 miles on the Alice Springs run and ftrst saw service in 1948. The J Class steam loco is used constantly and is now
considered to be ruMing better than ever.
The two engines and a collection of beautifully restored carriages completed the scene and we were delighted to have our own
'First Class' compartments. Picnic lunches were the order of the day and most of these had disappeared by the time we had
our break at Benalla!
Later, Neil and Nancy entertained us with refreshments and a program of vintage'selected shorts' at their "Tatty Theatre' in
seymour. Our sincere thanks to Neil and Nancy for their hospitality and for liaison with the Railway Heritage Centre. A
thoroughly enjoyable day out with a difference.
Chicago
Twenty members and friends attended Chicago at Her Majesty's Theatre on 18th September for a great night out. The group
tickets were lost in the mail for a week due to an incorrectly addressed envelope. But some sleuthing by Australia post saved
the day!
Based on a straight play and the 1942 film "Roxie Hart" starring Ginger Rogers and Adolphe Menjon, it was turned into a
musical in the 70s and was then known as "Chicago - A Musical Vaudeville". It tells a tuneful tale of murder, mayhem and
mirth. The machinations of today's press and legal fraternity makes the 1920s story seem more relevant than ever. Presented
in Vaudeville style in an aU black setting with a wonderful jazz band on stage throughout, performances could not be faulted.
The musicians were given the ultimate appreciation when the entire audience remained seated during their final play-out - not
one patrOn headed for the exits.
Melbourne has been lucky to host three world class musicals simultaneously - "Chicago", "Les Miserables-" and "Fiddler on
the Roof'.
Empire Theatre Tour
The former Hoyts Windsor Theatre, closed since 1962, has undergone a major transformation and is now the Empire
Disco/Night Club and Cafe. Despite weather that indicated the breaking of the drought, ten members inspected the premises
on 8th October.
