With the limited site depth to the rear lane way and the requirement to provide the maximum space for the dance
floor, the theatre was designed with a dress circle and minimal stage space. The stage area was only suitable to
accommodate small recitals, as Schultz intended to retain the old Theatre Royal with its larger stage area.

Royal Picture Theatre c.1930
The theatre was built in brick and steel at a cost of 11 ,000 pounds (2). The imposing frontage included a full
width cantilever verandah. The cement rendered facade was patterned and incorporated several small pain
windows. Three pairs of doors were centrally placed at the front with a shop on each side. Ceramic tiles com-
pleted the decoration to the shop fronts and theatre entrance.
