With a revised permit for 56 apartments and four shops, the site was
again sold in 2003, and a satisfactory outcome was finally achieved. It
took seven years, but the historic theatre was transformed into a modern
apartment block. The site maintained its original street front, with 30
apartments behind the 1914 facade, which included the two towers
which had disguised water tanks. The apartments are accessed from a
central atrium over the former stalls' central aisle. 30 more apartments
are included in a nine storey block behind the cinema building.
Many of the delays in the redevelopment of the Barkly related to its
heritage listing. This does not appear to have been a problem for the
developers of many of the other cinemas now providing homes for
future generations.
