Viewers of the television show The Block may recall the 2014 series in which contestants renovated the former Dux picture theatre in Albert Park.
This was an early silent cinema which had a number of subsequent uses. It was marketed by the producers as a former cinema and, in the course
of their research, they visited the CATHS archive. We were able to provide early images which were often screened during filming and promotion
of the show. The building was converted to four luxury apartments, each of which sold for in excess of $2,300,000.
In researching this article, I attempted to locate similar developments in other States
but have not found comparable examples. It appears that Melbourne is alone in this
desire to retain the look of their cinematic heritage and provide the experience of
living within walls which once provided a very different entertaining experience. ✶
