Within months
of the commencement of
television broadcasts in Melbourne
and Sydney which heralded enormous
changes for cinema exhibitors, a new
screen and sound equipment for the
presentation of Cinemascope, along
with new seating, were installed at the
Ideal.

opened on Friday the 29 June,
1956 with King Richard and The
Crusaders. Forthcoming attractions
in Cinemascope included The Student
3ULQFH 7KUHH &RLQV LQ WKH )RXQWDLQ
and Broken Lance.
Following the introduction of
television to regional South Australia,
combined with the opening of the
Sunset Drive-In * at Kadina in
1958, the Ideal had been reduced to
Saturday night screenings only. With
the G.U. lease due to expire on the 31
st
of December, 1965, the theatres days

Quo Vadis was presented on
Saturday 18 December
