In 1980 the Macquarie was opened
by former Wallaby captain, John
Thornett, as The Rugby Club.
Little real alteration had been
necessary apart from constructing a
(false) flat floor in the downstairs stalls
area. Since that time, further changes
have mainly involved the closing of the
four shop fronts, which has somewhat
diminished the once attractive façade.
In November 2009 the building was
purchased by Phoebe and Sam GROUND LEVEL
Maroulis with an inspirational plan to
synergise businesses and community
groups to create a dynamic communal
venue for the region within the reborn
Macquarie Theatre Space.
The hope is that all individuals,
community groups and organisations
within the Wellington Shire with an
interest or involvement with this target
group, will offer ideas and resources for
the implementation of arts-based
programs to utilise this wonderful
space.
Restoration and development of this
fine building is a large and gradual
undertaking, but it will be fantastic to see
it returned to local use as The UPPER LEVEL
Macquarie Theatre lives once again!
