a projection room was added and films began
the following year.

AUSTRALIA
Civic Newcastle
Also designed as a live theatre, the Civic
opened as a cinema in 1929 and showed
films until the 1960s. After major renovation
it re-opened in 1993 as Australia’s premier
regional theatre.
White’s solution to the problems of stage box
design (see also page 2): Cantilevered and
stepped, heads in the front box do not obstruct
the view of those behind.
