Above left: Hoyts Cinema had a seating capacity of more than 2,400 only about 100 less than the Victory St. Kilda!
Although often derided for its austerity, the Cinema was an important Week One house for most of its life.
Above Right: The Theatre (1912) expired in the late silent period. It served as a church for years until substantially rebuilt to look
like a church. Not shown is the Victoria North Richmond.

Above: Snowy’s Chapel Street 1950, the distinctive verandah of Hoyts Empress Prahran at right. The street scene explains how
switcher’s were able to travel distances in times impossible today.
From Hoyts Cinema to the Empress was four km. If Snowy’s journey was from the Cinema Richmond to the Victory St Kilda
(both Week One), the distance was 7km, one way.
