Some theatres were transformed for a new life as an Independent Theatre, and none more comprehensively than the Albert Park
Kinema. Designed for Hoyts by William Pitt, the interior of the original Kinema (1919) was a simplified reworking of his De Luxe
(1915).
Top: The original exterior sign - Hoyts Pictures - in a vertical leadlight, partly obscured by the fish-tail neon, was identical to the one
on the De Luxe.
Above: The proscenium lacks integration with the fulsome cornice, which was a feature of the De Luxe (See CR 46).
Hoyts relinquished the Kinema when they opened the Park (1938) nearby. Turn the page to see the extent of the changes made by
