took over the lease of the Burnie Theatre and
also took control of the Vogue Theatre when
Star bought out Local Amusements in April
1938.
The Burnie Theatre became known as the
Burnie Star Theatre, which was rather
confusing when Star Theatres built the new
1000 seat (or 900 as listed in Film Weekly) Star
Theatre at 69 Mount Street, Burnie, in 1955.
After it opened on 4 October that year, the
Vogue Theatre was closed, later to become a
police citizen’s boys club, but the Burnie
Theatre continued on until it, too, was closed
in 1965.
The theatre and Town Hall complex was sold
to Tasmanian retailer G. H. Fitzgerald in 1976
to become part of a new department store that
occupied the whole block. When Fitzgerald’s
folded in 1995 and was taken over by the
Charles Davis group, the department store was
then re-branded “Harris Scarfe”. ★
