LIFE MEMBERSHIP AWARDS
At our final meeting for 2017, held at the Sun Theatre on November 26, a significant event took place in the history of CATHS.
The implementation of the additional category of Life Membership had been discussed a number of times over the years. On July 27 2017, the
Committee made the decision to amend the Rules accordingly. The proposed amendments to the Rules were then put to the Annual General Meeting
in August 2017, and were unanimously approved by the membership.
Following the approval, two nominations were received from CATHS member, Peter Wolfenden, proposing that Life Membership should be awarded
to foundation member, Fred Page, and long-serving Secretary, Mike Trickett. The Committee agreed unanimously and, at the meeting on November 26,
Fred and Mike proudly accepted these recognitions of their outstanding
contribution to CATHS.
Fred Page
From the time CATHS was formed in 1989, Fred was a key player and, in
many ways, was the ‘face and voice' of the organisation, ably filling the
position of Secretary for many years. Indeed, Presidents may come and go,
but Secretaries generally continue for greater periods. They often become
the ‘lynch pin' and stabiliser for the organisation.
Fred was one of the foundation members of CATHS when our Society was
formed in December 1989. He was the first Secretary, serving in this role
until 1996, when he became Vice President for a year, returning to the
position of Secretary for the 1997/1998 CATHS year.
Fred 'retired' to Bendigo and, from 2000-2007, was our Central Victorian
Coordinator.
As well as these official duties, Fred wrote many articles for CinemaRecord
under his own name, various pseudonyms and anonymously.
Mike Trickett
There is no doubt that Mike Trickett has been one of the hardest and most
consistent workers within CATHS.
Mike joined CATHS in June 1997 and served as Vice President from 1998
to 2001. In 2001, he switched to being Secretary during a period of much
activity, change and growth within the Society and continues to be Secretary
today.
Our late President, Gerry Kennedy, often acknowledged how much he relied
on Mike. This was not only due to Mike’s skills as Secretary, but also because
of his ability to take on very difficult tasks for the Society and achieve the
desired results.
One of the most important has been the re-organisation of the Archive. In
the very first issue of CinemaRecord in January 1994, as a then Committee
member, Gerry Kennedy announced that the CATHS
Archive had commenced operation by collecting
cuttings and articles in folders. Over the years, the
collection grew and it soon became obvious that some
form of computerisation would be necessary. Mike
stepped in and, after some investigation, advised the
Committee and membership that we should move to
a searchable computerised database. This would
involve scanning most, if not all of our collection and
assembling it into this searchable database.
Mike has been involved in nearly all aspects of
CATHS activities since he joined. Some of the most
obvious are the Cine Collectables Fair, the
organisation of many tours and inspections, co-
editing CinemaRecord, writing the occasional article
for CinemaRecord, maintaining our website and,
perhaps one of the most obvious to all of us who
attend meetings, his film/video “entertainment
programs” at the Sun theatre - always well received
by members.
