Alf did manage to see some of the sights of the cities abroad, and he sent Gifts, photographs, and letters to Rene from every one of them. His sense
of humour remained constant.
Alf never mentioned any deaths to us children, but he saw it all. The driving job was for the tank transporter corps taking tanks from one front
directly to the next without let-up during active service. He experienced the terror of bombs whistling down around them and hitting their quarters,
on one occasion not exploding after going through five floors, as in the photograph.
What a relief it was to return to New Zealand. But forever after, Alf leapt out of bed and dived under it as in a dug out, reliving the violence and
horrors. A life of film and, eventually, a 300 acre farm were lifesavers.
