PENRITH
The theatre started as an open-air show on an
empty block in High Street and commenced
screenings on 9th March, 1911. Seating 1000
patrons, it operated during the warmer months
and closed over winter.
In 1920, the owners purchased the Foresters
Hall next door as well as the Market Building
at its rear and converted it to the Nepean
Picture Theatre.
Skating replaced film in 1929 until the
property was purchased by Mr L.F.Spence who
renovated and re-opened the theatre in August
1930.
The Nepean was extensively remodelled in
1935 when a small dress-circle and foyer
spaces were added. Amazingly, during these
works, the theatre continued to screen at night. Work underway to modernise the Nepean Theatre. (Kevin Cork)
