Carlton Movie House. New Rivoli - Camberwell.
The newer theatres of the mid-30s and early
40s usually had internal facilities. At the second
Camberwell Rivoli, opened in 1940, the
originals were so spacious and well-designed
that no upgrades have been needed. Of course
other facilities have been added in the new
sections of the multi-screen complex.
Other examples of changes forced on
Melbourne’s suburban theatres were:
Victory St Kilda: With limited front-of-
house space, a new hallway was constructed Star - Mansfield. Outside but spotless!
via the front stalls exit.
Crystal Palace Caulfield: Built in 1921 and
New Malvern: A similar scheme was extensively modernised to counter the opposition
used, eliminating a walk to the rear along from the 1936 Waverley Theatre nearby, it
Dandenong Road. retained, until 1955, rear lavatories with access
from a small front stalls entry foyer.
Carlton Movie House: This very old cinema was
Carlton - a squalid Gents. CATHS’ former meeting venue. Management To their credit, management came up with
built a new access from the front stalls. a bold solution. They built a new unit on
spare land on the Dandenong Road side of
the building. It included an extension of the
stalls foyer, a new staircase and for the first
time, a balcony foyer. Sadly, after all this,
the theatre only lasted until 1960.
