Cinema Deakin was opened with
a special screening for staff and
contractors on 22 October, 1975 although
the Health Department approval was
dated 23 December, 1975. In fact the
theatre was officially opened earlier -
on the 23 of October with The Great

Waldo Pepper at a charity screening.
Mr. Len Nulty (of the well-known
Nulty cinema family) was the
manager of the project and Mr.
Chris Mitchell was the manager.
In July 1981 further improvements
were made. Biscuit-coloured, melded
carpet was fitted to the brick walls to
improve the acoustics in the auditorium.
The theatre was reseated at this time
and Dolby Stereo sound was installed.
The cinema reopened in July 1981.
Later the projectors were changed to Len Nulty
Kallee 21’s with Pion Xenon lamp-
houses running 6000ft spools. After the Below: 1973. Oops - Spot the mistake?
Plaza Theatre in Melbourne closed
in 1971, its Cinemeccanica Victoria-8
(35/70mm) projectors were purchased
and later installed at Cinema Deakin.
