No one could have predicted that a third
National Theatre was fated to meet its
end in flames!
On 30 June 1971, the Empress
auditorium and roof were destroyed
by a fire and the venue was badly
damaged by water. Subsequently it
was sold and the company was offered
a number of other empty theatres
around Melbourne.
