LYCEUM SECRETS
ehind the scenes at today’s Tribal Theatre, can be found
Bmany reminders of the numerous changes to the old
Lyceum Theatre.
Different brick-work clearly shows past additions to the
auditorium. These include the 1909 original walls, the later
use of modern cream - brick in extensions and windows
sealing - and finally large, grey cinder-blocks used to replace
the old tiered ceiling cupola and roof trusses, thus increasing
the side wall height for the modern Cinema George ceiling
and a flat iron roof.
The 1909 façade is covered by modern facing, and the original
auditorium walls are visible behind the plaster and curtains from the
1966 make-over. Twinning has hidden some of the George décor
behind scenes - and the two projection rooms and basement area all
remain interesting places to explore.
Thanks to CATHS member, Steve Malone for sharing these
discoveries and pictures taken on his recent inspection.
