A FATEFUL DAY
Sometimes change just creeps into our lives. Here is the entertainment page on the first day that television in
Melbourne intersected with cinema and theatre - 5 November 1956 - and it was business as usual. Australians have
yet to decide how the pie will be shared between home viewing and going out.
The first high-profile casualty, the Village Toorak will close in December 1958 and the second, the Regent
Gardiner will follow two months later. A year later the dominos really start to topple.
