Hoyts Annual Report: The company reported a 64.4 per cent jump in 1997-98 net profit to $38.7 million, with
sales up 32 per cent to $503.5 million as the group opened another 354 movie screens. Chief executive Peter
lvany said Hoyts planned to open a further 250 screens this year, increasing the total number to about 1800.
The company may have to rein back its expansion plans in emerging markets such as Chile and Brazil if

Amalgamated Holdings: Amalmagated's Greater Union picture theatre chain now has 328 screens in Aus-
tralia after opening 84 more screens last year. This includes the new 30-screen Marion complex in Adelaide.

Wodonga: The booming population growth is behind a plan to build a $30 million shopping and cinema complex
in October. The Harts Property Management will redevelop the existing Birallee Shipping Centre, and a long-
term lease has been negotiated with Australian Multiplex Cinemas for a six-screen 2600 square metre cinema
complex will feature high-back luxury seating, 16 metre screens, stadium design for uninterrupted sight-line
viewing and digital surround sound. The complex will hold 1400 seats and is expected to provide employment
for 40 casual and full-time staff. The Age, Property, 9/9/98.
Camberwell: Another 19 screens are proposed! As at the end of July, Village were still in negotiations with the
Council regarding car parking issues for their proposed extra 7 screens to their existing Rivoli Twin cinema.
This may go to the Administrative Appeals Tribunal in October if no outcome before then. Also, real estate
agent, Mr. Barry lies, is proposing a $30 million shopping and 12 screen complex just north of the Camberwell
junction in Harold St which runs into Burke Rd at Prospect Hill Rd. If all these proposals go ahead, Camberwell
could end up with a total of 21 screens at two locations.

Box Hill: Reading Australia is proposing to build a 12 or 14 screen multiplex at the Whitehorse Plaza. Construc-

New Home for Melbourne Theatre Company: The Melbourne Theatre Company, Victoria's oldest state drama
company, expects to be able to move into a new 500-seat theatre on a site in Southbank Boulevard opposite
the rear of the National Gallery of Victoria. The Age, 8/9/98
Cinema Plus Earnings Jump: The owner of Melbourne's I MAX theatre, Cinema Plus, has revealed an 85 per
cent jump in after-tax annual profit before abnormals to $6.44 million. Total revenue grew 61 per cent to $19.7
million, and the result included a full year of trading in Adelaide and 37 days in Melbourne. The Age, 218/98.
Seven Network Sells Its Share of MGM: Australian television broadcaster Seven Network has sold its 25 per
cent investment in the Hollywood film studio Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer for $US389 million ($A658 million). It also
scored a 20 year exclusive output agreement with MGM for all movie and TV programming The Age, 21/8/98.
Hoyts In Partnership to Build More Cinemas In South America: Hoyts looks set to conquer the South
American market after spilling its Argentinian and Chilean assets into a $179 million joint-venture company, that
it will own equally with the US exhibitor GC Companies. The new company, Hoyts General Cinema South
America, expects to have 500 screens by 2003 in the underscreened market, making it the largest operator in

Frankston Multiplex News: Village Cinemas have reconfirmed their commitment to redevelop their Frankston
cinemas into a high-tech, six-screen multiplex. The redevelopment of the Village Plaza on the Nepean Highway
(beach side) will also include an interactive games centre and a themed upgrading qf the building's facade.
Meanwhile, construction is set to commence in October on the Reading Australia multiplex on the Frankston
Railway Station site. The $30 million development will feature 12 screens, restaurants, cafes, a multi-level
undercover car park and the redevelopment of Frankston railway station. The project is scheduled to be completed
