             Three New Cinemas Open: Since the last edition of Newsreel, three new cinemas have opened in Melbourne:
             The I MAX Theatre in Carlton, Hoyts 7 Broad meadows and Village Century City Walk 10 at Glen Waverley.

             IMAX opened on May 23rd  1998 as the first stage of the new Melbourne Museum. The 480 seat Melbourne
             I MAX Theatre features the world's largest movie screen, 28 metres high by 31  metres wide. Most of the eight-
             storey high cinema is underground. Some of the films screening at the theatre are in 3D. Viewers wear state-of-
             the-art liquid crystal glasses for 3D movies.


             Hoyts Broadmeadows multiplex opened on 25th June 1998 and has 7 cinemas including two 'CINEMAXX'
             cinemas (stadium seating, digital sound and Superscreens). The cinemas are located at Broadmeadows Shop-
             ping Centre.
             Village Century City Walk opened on 19 August 1998. The multiplex has 10 cinemas, including 2 'Gold Class'
             cinemas. Located at 285 Springvale Road, Glen Waverley.

             Waverley Cinema: Nicole Jean from the Waverley writes: "Many of you are aware of our plans to add 2 x 50
             seat theatrettes to  enable  more variety  and  flexibility in  our programming  decisions. Unfortunately we are
             unable to access the space that these theatrettes will occupy until mid 1999. However we now get the opportunity
             to commence the 2nd stage of our renovations and extensions now. Our current 300 seat auditorium will be
             turned into a 187 seat and a 70 seat auditorium, and all going to plan, these should both be operating just
             before Christmas (pending council permit).

             APCS Photographic Market: The Australian Photographers Collectors Society Inc will be holding their next
             Photographic Market on 11th October 1998, at the Camberwell Centre,.9am to 3pm. $3 admission.

             New Zealand Cinema & Theatre Heritage: Formerly the 'NZ Vintage Broadcast & Projection' the NZ CATH
             magazine is published independently by Peter Mac (McQuarters) as a vehicle for recording the social, technical
             and architectural history and development of cinemas and theatres in New Zealand. Associated items of interest
             from  the enthusiast scene and stories from  overseas are also featured.  To  contribute articles, or for further

             Shepparton Capri Village Cinemas: On August 31st, work commenced on the main foyer area downstairs,
             with  work also to commence  on  two new cinemas on the  second  level  of an adjoining  building  next door.
             Completion date for the cinemas is expected Feb/Mar of '99. As soon as the new cinemas are up and running,
             the 319 seat cinema 2 will be closed with modifications to raise the ceiling to enable a larger screen to be fitted.
             When all completed, 4 cinemas will make up the complex. A 5th (and smallest) cinema that was proposed last
             year, will now not go ahead.

             Village Roadshow Annual Report: Continued growth of multi-screen cinemas helped the group boost profit
             by 27 per cent to $30 million. The chairman of Village, Mr John Kirby, said the group added 204 cinema screens
             during the year and  planned another 180 screens to be built mostly in  Europe. "The main thrust for Village
