East Malvern
Former Waverley Theatre on the market again and subject to a mortgagees auction in early April. This Art-Deco
theatre opened in 1936 and closed with the onset of television. Recently was used as Royal Receptions.
Frankston Reading Multiplex: Work to Start Mid 1998
Work is due to start in July or August this year on the $34 million 12-screen cinema, restaurant and carpark
complex at Frankston railway station. The Public Transport Corporation (PTC) have signed a heads of agreement
with US cinema chain Reading and it is expected that project will get the final go ahead in the near future.
Paperwork is being finalised between the joint developers, Frankston-based builders Mackie and Staff and
Reading, and the PTC. A $24,000 model of the planned complex was taken to the US after being shown to
Frankston councillors, council officers and MPs. [Source: The Independent, Frankston, 3rd February 1998]

The stately Town Hall is being considered for conversion to an intimate concert hall suitable for chamber music,
radio broadcasts, etc.

Single screen opened in the squash centre in December 1997.
Melbourne
Russell Street Live Theatre (M.T.C.) converted a former church hall) for sale. Tenders close 12/3/98. Property
backs onto the Forum.
Melbourne
IMAX to open in March. This is said to be the largest 3-D cinema in the world. The $21 million cinema is
stage one of the new $260 million Melbourne Museum complex at the Royal Exhibition Building Carlton Gar-
dens site. For 3-D patrons will wear special high-tech headset glasses that decode infra-red signals reflected
from the screen, opening and closing liquid crystal lenses to create a 3-D effect. The 500 seat IMAX will have a
scree:n 31 metres wide and 8 stories (a new type of measurement without reference to either feet or metres)
and is so large it could show a Boeing 737 life-size.
St. Kiilda
Air-conditioning now installed at the Astor. Part of the on-going improvements over the past 15 years.
Warragul
Cinema Centre opened with 3 screens on the 1st of January, 1998.

Hoyts
Increase of 25.2% in profit helped by "Titanic". Announcement of new 16 screens at Eastland, 7 screens at
Broadmeadows and an additional 8 screens at Chadstone in 1999.
Theatre Historical Society of America now Online
Congratulations to the Theatre Historical Society of America who have just recently launched their website!
This site has lots of information about the THSA and its activities, publications and projects. Also has a very
comprehensive links section and a great animated picture of the York Theatre, where the Society has its

Tenders are called for the sale and removal of Two (2) only "Kalee" 35mm Magnetic Sound Film Projectors,
serial numbers 33 and 34 (we think).
Tenders for the purchase of either one or both projectors will be received by the Nhill & District Historical
Society, c/- 44 Nelson Street, Nhill. Closing date is 30th March, 1998.
