But here's an observation. The fundamental concept of our home-made projector which had been designed at
the tum of the century, is exactly the same as the modern projector of today. Nothing basically has changed.
So the pioneers got it right the first time. Sure! Now they are using platters instead of spools, and sound-on-disc
has progressed to optical track, magnetic track, multi-magnetic tracks and now, the full circle back to disc, this
time, recorded digitally, so the sound in the theatres has become louder and louder and LOUDER and LOUDER!!!
If volume be the bench-mark for quality, then the fidelity of today's cinema sound is unbearably good! But
basically, the mechanics of the projector haven't changed or been improved over the last hundred years.
Oh! The name has changed. No longer do we talk of the Kinematograph or the Thaumatrope, or the
Phenakistiscope, the Vitascope, the Mutoscope or the Zoopraxiscope!
Pity. Those names were quite a challenge. Not only to spell - but to pronounce, especially after a glass or two
of Porphery Pearl during the intermission!
