Cinema 2 seats 280 and has a warm ambience with its red screen and wall curtains and seats. This audito-
rium has been built beside the main building and as it is built on top of a shop it is long and narrow. This
cinema is air conditioned and gas heated. The bio box is built at the rear the cinema.

The Smith family has been associated with the Regent for over 50 years. Mr Tony Smith is the owner I
manager. Plans have been approved to build a third cinema parallel to Cinema 2, again above a shop.
Alterations to the upstairs foyer are about to commence to prepare for this construction.

Apart from the many shops and office that were built as part of the Regent complex, neighboroughing shops
are also owned by the Smith Family including a "Timezone" amusement centre.

            CHILTERN- Star
This theatre began as a dance hall built as part of the historic Star Hotel in 18.. The building is of solid
brick and is plain in design. The hall was converted to screen films in most unusual manner; the outside bio
box was built on to the rear stage wall (the ports are still to be seen) and the stage floor area was used for
additional seating. The theatre seated 250 and was used until the early 1960's.

            WANGARATTA - Amphitheatre
This open air theatre was opened and closed in 1916 and was situated in Murphy St. near Ford St. It
became part of a motor garage.

WANGARATTA - His Majesty's Open Air
This theatre was opened in December 1921 and was located at the rear of the Royal Hotel. The theatre was
entered through a wide right of way to the left of the hotel in Reid St. It was owned by The Victorian Amuse-
ments Pty. Ltd. of 510 Collins St. Melbourne. The Manageress was Miss A. Schroeder of Ovens St.
Wangaratta. A brick building was used as the engine room and bio box. The ticket box and refreshment
room was on the right hand side of the entrance gate at the end of the right of way.

In 1930 the health department records show this theatre as being owned by Combined Victorian Theatres
which was a public company with theatres around country Victoria. In 1933 the theatre was converted into a
            skating rink.

            WANGARATTA - Plaza/His Majesty's
It is likely that this building began as a hall. The building was of solid brick and presented a rather small
facade to Murphy St. The auditorium proper was built back from the frontage and was entered through a
narrow marquee leading into the foyer. The Health Department records in June, 1933 show that the owners,
North Eastern Theatres, applied to add a timber gallery, an enlarged foyer, new office and rewinding room.
After these renovations were completed the theatre was reopened in September 1934 as the Plaza Theatre.

The seating capacity was 705 (stalls 478 and circle 227). The circle was accessed from both the foyer and
the stalls area. Other records show that heating was added in 1937, the building was lengthened (at the
back) in 1941 . After further building alterations the cinema was reopened in 1951 with a seating of 775.
Gas heating was installed in 1957. In 1965 the building was sold to Mr. Pitari of Wangaratta and in 1978
proposals to alter the building for commercial purposes were recorded. Currently the building is used as a
            furniture show room.

            WANGARATTA - Village/Orana
This theatre was built at 21 - 25 Reid St. Health Department records show that plans for a two level theatre
were proposed by the architects Cowper, Murphy and Associates. This theatre was to seat 1308 (stalls 666
and circle 642). In March, 1955 revised plans for a steel framed, brick building were submitted. This
theatre was tentatively called the Moomba and was to seat 1175 (stalls 677 and circle 498). The Orana
            officially seated 1100.
