CINEMA PROMOTION -

The CATHS Archive recently received a bound volume of the Hoyts Herald from 1939 to 1941
from the estate of our late member, Ian Williams.
This was an in-house magazine which "recorded the thoughts and activities of the personnel of
Hoyts' Melbourne suburban circuit".
There appears to have been a lot of friendly rivalry between the theatres and there were regular
competitions for lobby displays and an annual inspection to name the champion theatre on the circuit.
There was also a lot of pooling of ideas for promotions. Several theatres (or managers) appear to
have excelled at this, and a selection of their ideas makes interesting reading today.
