The Adelaide Regent stripped of its fittings soon after closure. Images by John Thiele.
John Thiele comments … The chandeliers were still hanging in the auditorium and upper foyer at the time I took these pictures. Hoyts no longer wanted
them, so they were donated to St Peters College, the owners of the theatre at the time. They in turn decided to sell them, and sometime after my photos
were taken, all of the chandeliers were removed from the theatre and taken to the Mitcham Antique Gallery in Adelaide for restoration and eventual sale.
I saw them advertised in June 2005, and obtained permission to take some close-ups of the main chandelier, which was formerly front centre in the
auditorium above what was once the lounge. Earlier, that chandelier had come from the Fitzroy Regent in Melbourne. It was the last of the Regent
chandeliers to be sold by the Mitcham Gallery, and went to a private owner in Hobart. To the best of my knowledge, all of the other chandeliers have ended
up in private homes in Adelaide. All very sad.
