featuring the famous Triangle Films.
Pat’s Band.
From the 1920’s the Edwards also ran another
cinema named the Burdekin which operated in
the Military Drill Hall.
In December 1938, movie operations at the
Burdekin were transferred to the Tropix
Theatre, a semi open-air venue next to the
Commercial Hotel also in Queen Street.
By this time the Edwards family had leased their
theatres to a Brisbane based company named
Delta Theatres Pty. Ltd, the principal man being
Mr Tim Osborne who reputedly owned theatres
throughout Queensland.
During the war years, “Family Nights” were
Monday and Friday which were cheaper to
attend. A serial was played on these nights as
well as the usual Newsreels before the double
feature program. During the War, the Newsreels
would be a star attraction to picture goers who
were hungry for news of the war effort. One
lady used to sit night after night knitting socks
for the troops even though the lights were out.
Matinees were held on a Saturday afternoon
when serials were again played.
