St Kilda History
Above: The main St Kilda pier was a
popular afternoon stroll c.1905. Luna
Park and the early versions of Palais
Pictures will be built 500m east (to the
right) of here.
Right: Walter Burley Griffin tricked up the
interior of the Palais De Danse as part of
the plan to improve both the cinema and
its adjacent dance venue. The Griffin
legacy in St Kilda survives in two of his
vase-like street lights, a feature which
once ran the length of The Esplanade.
The St Kilda Theatre in Fitzroy Street
(centre left) was built for Millard
Johnson and William Gibson with the
profits from The Story Of The Kelly
Gang. The theatre was about 2 km
from the early Palais Pictures, but
Johnson and Gibson did have a rival
cinema on the Esplanade.
