Some of these exhibits were nine-screen
installations, each in its own temporary cinema.
All were technically proficient; some, despite
foregoing all sense of plot, were strangely
addictive, giving this observer a gnawing feeling
that perhaps he should take a class at ACMI and
‘get with it’.
Equally surreal was to step back into daylight
on Flinders Street, and stare upward at the soaring
minaret and dome of the former State/Forum
theatre; a reminder that in theme and presentation,
visual imagery has changed mightily in four
generations.
ACMI has set itself a lot of ground to cover
and on the evidence of this visit, does it well. ★
