State Historian
Left: Niall Maurici, winner of the title ‘Young Historian of the Year’,
pictured with the Hon. Julie Bishop, Minister for Education, Science
and Technology at the awards ceremony for the National History
Challenge 2006. The theme for the Challenge was ‘Turning points’.
Niall was a Year 10 student when he chose to write the history of the
State Cinema North Hobart. As Tasmania’s oldest operating
cinema, the State has certainly had a few turning points in its
history. Enjoy Niall’s account on page six.
Below: The State c.1978 when it was the property of the Australian
Film Institute. The AFI relinquished their stewardship in 2002, but
public support for the theatre is ongoing.
