The Princess, a prestige live theatre of Melbourne, turned to talking pictures in August 1929, beset by the same
pressures to give the public what it wanted as were the silent picture houses on nearby Bourke Street.
Top: Jim Lawrence, first projectionist at the Princess, holds the screen speaker which will go into the sound horn.
Above: The team, with Jim Lawrence (centre) assembles the equipment in the bio box. The projector is a Simplex
projector on a Universal base, the sound head is Western Electric and light source is a Hall and Connelly arc.
