Philip Brady by Denzil Howson
Philip Brady, our fourth patron, is one of Australia's best known media personalities. For more than f01ty years he bas
enjoyed a successful career in show business.
lt is understandable that his career should have taken that path. In the twenties and thirties his father was a well known
composer of popular songs of the day and his mother was secretary to Jack O'Hagen at AJJans Music Warehouse. With that
sort of family background it was inevitable that young Philip should be drawn to radio, the cinema, and television.
When sti II at college he was an active member of
the camera club and became fascinated with ama-
teur movie making. Two of his mates at school who
were also involved in this hobby were Jim Murphy,
now one of our leading show-biz journalists and
Mike Walsh, who today is one of Australia's suc-
cessful eotrepreneurs.
H was on Good Friday il!l 1958 that a nervous Philip
Brady reported to Tom Miller, Senior Producer at
Channel 9 in Melbourne. Philip was auditioning
for a two week engagement as a temporary booth
announcer. That two weeks extended to thirteen
years. In that time Philip worked on almost every
live show on the station. "In Melbourne Tonight"
viewers knew him as a co-performer with Graham
and Bert, on their five nights a week live variety
show.
He was the youngest compere to have his own
games show, "Concentration", on Nine.
In the seventies, after leaving Channel 9, he mi-
grated to Sydney to Work for the "Games Show"
Production House, Grundy's, where he worked in
3000 games show episodes. In between times he
worked on Gold Coast Radio for five years, joined
3AW in Melbourne at the beginning of the 90's. and
is still working at 3AW and affiliated stations.
He also does a regular television spot on "Good Morning Australia" with Bert Newton.
' Is it any wonder that in many circles Philip Brady is known as "Mr. Show-Biz". In an industry where you don't rake your
lunch because your show could be cancelled by the time you get back, Phil is a great survivor.
He is also a great bloke and we welcome him as a patron. and we know that his broad knowledge of show-business will be
an asset to CATHS-Y.
