at almost any speed you liked -so when projecting, say, "LAND WITHOUT MUSIC" with Richard Tauber, you
could listen to Tauber as Tauber, or Tauber as Donald Duck or Tauber as Malcolm Me Eachern (the famous
Australian bass).
Yes! The "KLEESOUND" was a winner amongst Home Movie buffs in the late forties and early fifties. It was
the brain-child of Alan Kleeberg - hence the name "KLEESOUND". Alan was the resident technical boffin at
HOME CINEMAS in Century Building, Swanston Street. He was an inventive wizard. He had no diplomas, no
degrees, no certificates to verify his incredible ability as an equipment designer and innovator. No technical
task, seemingly, was beyond him.
When the Home Movie industry began to slowly fade to black with the onset of television, Alan set his sights on
a T.V. career. I was working at Channel Nine at the time. It took some time and at first seemed an impossible
task to convince the Chief Engineer at Nine that he should consider anyone for a job who didn't have a piece
of paper which stated categorically that he was able to tell the difference between a volt and an ohm. But
eventually we managed to cut through the red tape, and thus began what is now known as the Kleeberg era at
Channel 9. Within a few short weeks, Alan was provided with his own Technical Laboratory and an assistant.
Whenever some technical problem arose which was beyond the province of the normal engineering staff, the
cry would go out, "Send for Kleeberg!".
Alan remained on the Channel Nine staff for more than thirty years, and even when he retired, he was retained
on a free-lance basis, because as someone said recently, "We just couldn t do without him". Alan Kleeberg,
inventor of the "KLEE-SOUND", television technical wizard, and a wonderful bloke, died in June this year after
a long and painful illness. So, as we said at the beginning ... . . Vale - a lovable genius!
