Visiting the theatre one starts at the grand foyer vestibule in Mitchell Street where have been provided modern
Milk Bar and an attractive confectionery kiosk. In this vestibule one is charmed by the high dome ceiling
illuminated with 75 lamps set in the decorative panels. Coming to the blackwood and plate glass entrance
doors one enters the great foyer and is immediately struck with the spaciousness of this part of the theatre,
where crowds can be catered for with a minimum of inconvenience. At the end of the grand foyer directly facing
Mitchell Street is the entrance to the stalls between lofty columns under the staircase leading to the lounges
and dress circle.
Before going into the theatre proper an inspection is made of the heavily carpeted stairs and time is taken to
admire the beauty of the designing of the vaulting and the ceiling of the foyer 26 feet above the ground. It is
richly embellished in old ivory and gold, with deft touches of color artistically applied. Ones attention is riveted
to the magnificent chandelier hanging from the centre dome, weighing upwards of half a ton. This chandelier
harmonises with the architectural theme, and has been designed for that purpose. The architecture of the
grand foyer is a mixture of Anglo-Gothic, with a dominating note of Spanish. There are rich velour curtains in
henna and gold tassels and fringes.
