Our Own History Early CATHS-V Activities -Before ''Happenings"
CATHS-V NEWSSHEET NO.1 -1990
Our first meeting held on 25 February was a success with 13 of our 25 members present. At the conclusion of
the business part of the meeting we were entertained with episode 16 of Spysmasher and some newsreels
from the 1960's. All agreed that the presentation was improved out-of-sight by seeing the films in a proper
cinema setting. On 7 March, we enjoyed The General. Ken Tulloch generously provided the venue and prepared
the supper and Ken s friend Bruce Ardley supplied the feature film and the organ accompaniment.
NEWSSHEET NO. 2
In addition to Spysmasher we had Crime Doesn't Pay, a 1938 M.G.M. featurette supplied by Ken Tulloch.
Incidentally, the final episode of Spysmasher will be shown in June. Graham Smyth also entertained us and at
the same time experimented with super 8 thrown on to the cinema screen from the balcony and patched into
the cinema sound system.
NEWSSHEET NO. 3
A good turn-up was present to hear Harry Brett speak on "My Brilliant Career", his reminiscences of a lifetime
in the entertainment industry. Harry confessed to being born in a theatre in 1918 and is still connected with the
industry. During the period 1949-1971, Harry was manager of the Empire Theatre, Wisbech. At the same
meeting we saw the final episode of Spysmasher (3 years (including A.T.H.S. period) to complete this serial.

Active members have enjoyed a busy time lately with an inspection of the Valhalla Cinema. On 11 July the
Civic, Auckland N . .Z. video was shown together with a video of Perth city cinemas. On 15 July the Society s
presentation at the Performing Arts Museum's activity, Fan-fare. Alan Windley screened his film of theatres in
the western suburbs and the Camberwell Rivoli. The response from the public was excellent with many making
enquires about our activities and asking members questions about various theatres. Undoubtedly, one of our
most successful in-house events was our August Swap-Meet.
NEWSSHEET NO. 5
The formal part of 1990 concluded with the Annual Meeting. All officers were re-elected. Financially, the
Society is in a sound condition with the sum in the bank at the close of the Society s year equalling to more than
half our membership subscriptions. Since our August meeting we held our Charity Film Night which benefited
both our Society and the Anti-Cancer Council. Socially, we have enjoyed a variety of activities culminating in
our November end-of-year film/dinner night.
NEWSSHEET NO. 6 - 1991
1990 went out in style for the Society with many members attending the Victorian Movie Makers Super 8
Cinerama demonstration. This was a fantastic event for amateurs to produce. CATHS-V member Harvey
Hutchison was one of the two principal producers. The end of year function at the Cameo was also very
successful in terms of attendance, the quality of the dinner, and the show Presumed Innocent. The President
and Secretary were also invited to a screening of widescreen 3D slides and Super 8 Cinemascope movies at
the Australian Widescreen Associa.tion at Box Hill. Our 24 February meeting was a great success due to us
being able to welcome three new me.mbers.
NEWSSHEET NO. 7
The 1991 social activities commenced with a commendable attendance at the Australian Widescreen Society
on 12 March. The program was a breathtaking spectacle of widescreen slides projected in 3D and accompanied
by a compatible sound track and Informative commentary. The Princess visit. A ~ull report will appear in ATHS
Newsletter. Heritage Week featured a comprehensive display. There were colour photographs of the Capitol
and Regent Theatres, various theatre tickets and pass-outs, an explanation of the Cinerama process and a
display of 35mm strip film projectors. The World of Scope in Super 8, screened at our 28 April meeting, was a
real eyeopener with the width of the cinema screen almost all taken up with super 8. Congratulations to
Graham Smythe (and his trusty Elmo projector) for a wonderful show.
NEWSSHEET NO. 8
What a great time we've had since the April meeting. On a cold evening of the 30th May we had a good roll up
to the comfortably heated Roxy Theatrette. The Ballarat Regent excursion of 9 June was something also. We
found our way back-stage of the new proscenium and found the old one pretty much intact. The alteration Is
quite tasteful and reminiscent of the Cremorne Orpheium in Sydney. Restoration worl< In the foyer areas could
not be faulted. After lunch came Her Majestys. Winston and Doug from the local branch of the Theatre Organ
