U.F.A.'s first full sound film was a prestige picture called "Melodie des herzens" (1929 Melody of the Heart), this
premiered on December 13-1929. To maximise its distribution, the film was shot simultaneously in German,
English, and French and was thus an early example of the foreign version or multHanguage films. The three
countries then got together and decided to use this principal, to extend their market range. England's' first
attempt was a film called 'Atlantic", made in London, each scene would be filmed with the English cast, and
then again with the German cast and finally the French cast, all using the same sets and lighting. This costly
and cumbersome process took up valuable time and space in film studios, both in Europe and England, until it
was superseded by the simpl.er though less satisfactory technique of dubbing.
Wangaratta Cinema Centre by Michael Purden
Wangaratta, 230 kms north of Melbourne on the Hume highway and after more than 20 years without a hardtop
cinema, now enjoy tllree cinemas. The venue called the WANGARATTA CINEMA CENTRE opened NOV '95
with total seating for 489 patrons, and is situated atop the gracious and recently refurbished Wangaratta Co
Store building on the corner of Ovens and Reid Streets. Watco Investments appointed SMA Architects Pty Ltd
of 175 Flinders Street, Melbourne to design and construct the multiplex.
The larger auditorium (225 seats) has a red drapes/green seating colour scheme, the middle sized (150 seats)
has blue drapes and cherry seats, and the smallest (114 seats) has red drapes and green seats, all auditoriums
having drapes from ceiling to floor level at the sides and rear. Modern high backed seating was installed in all
cinemas.
Projection and sound installation was carried out by lnfaset Services of 8 Fink Street, Kensington with Century
projectors modified and fitted with Kelmar auto lens turrets, the stereo sound system by Smart. Complete
automation is by lnfaset. Screen advertising presented by Val Morgan. Film bookings are done through the
Village Cinema Group guaranteeing the best of new releases will come to Wangaratta. Art house films will also
be screened on Sunday and Monday evenings outside of school holidays .
