FROM THE FAMILY ALBUM By Brian Miller
This rare photograph shows Great-Aunt Dorothy "Dolly" Harris on the right, at the age of twenty in 1908.
She is on tour with Wolfe's Picture Co. as pianiste for Mr. Carl and Mrs. Violet Wolfe's (in the centre) touring
vaudeville and silent film show, "The World's Living Pictures". As the poster states, "The Entertainment of
the New Era!"
A Mr. Bullen is on the left, a conjurer/magician and part of the performance. Exact transport details are not
known but areas visited included Omeo, Mount St. Bernard Hospice, Bright and Ferntree Gully.
The logistics of travel to remote districts in the early days with poor roads, equipment to be carried and
those "My Fair Lady" hats to be packed gives food for thought. A combination of trains and local horse-
drawn vehicles seems likely.
Aunt Dolly eventually decided to give up the touring life but in the "show must go on" tradition, her sister
Elsie took over.
The photograph is reproduced by kind permission of her daughter, Mrs. Dorothy King.
