Sunday- more food, a lavish breakfast and then into the Capitol, next door. For those who were not there and
have books on Australian Theatres, the Capitol auditorium is a smaller version of the Spanish style Roxy,
Parramatta.
Although nearly 65 years old, the theatre has been so well maintained it looks nor more than 2 years old.
Unfortunately, due to commercial necessity, it is being converted to a triplex. Thankfully the existing decora-
tion will be preserved but entombed when the alterations are done. It is planned to alter it in the fashion of the
Forum/Rapallo with the upstairs screen being brought forward to the edge of the existing circle. The Manager,
Stan Stevens, kindly lent archivist Gerry Kennedy some historical material for copying. Stan was presented
with a framed certificate recording the CATHS-V visit to the Capitol.
On the return journey some fortunate people gained access to the Theatre Royal, Camperdown, before arriv-
ing in Colac for lunch, and a visit to the former Regent Theatre. The President of the RSL, Les Robertson,
kindly opened up the old theatre for us and it was pleasing to note that apart from the levelling of the stalls area,
most of the theatrical elements are still in place. The RSL, have made excellent use of the foyer spaces and
the dress circle, now furnished with ex Melbourne Capitol chairs is virtually original. There is no equipment in
the bio box, but provision is made to screen films by hoisting a screen midway between the circle edge and the
proscenium.
After the weekend feast of food and theatres, we had just a day or two to recover before venturing out to the
Widescreen Society's presentation of Super 8 Cinerama. CATHS-V people outnumbered the "locals" and
thoroughly enjoyed Harvey and Wade's very professional program.
